How to Avoid an MOT Fail
by Simran Sehmi | 15 May 2020
Did you know that nearly 50% of all faults found during an MOT can be avoided by carrying out regular, basic maintenance, like replacing tyres, bulbs and wipers?
The latest MOT testing data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) shows that around 40% of cars fail their MOT at the first attempt!
School yourself on the common MOT failures below in order to save money and make sure you pass your MOT next time it comes around.
Regular checks to avoid that failed MOT
You can avoid the most common MOT fails by checking:
- tyre condition and pressure – a good 10% of all faults found are related to tyres
- mirrors, wipers and washers - 8.5% of all faults are related to ‘Driver’s view of the road’
- lightbulbs - 30% of all MOT failures are related to lighting and signalling
Checking lights to avoid an MOT fail
Nearly 1 in 5 of all cars taken for MOT have a problem with lighting and signalling, which are often simple issues such as blown bulbs.
Checking your lightbulbs is easy to do. Often you just need to give them a light tap to see if they are loose or damaged and if they do need replacing, you can do them yourself. Ideally before your MOT.
Checking tyres to avoid an MOT fail
During 2014/15, 7.4% of car MOT fails were due to tyre issues.
Use a depth gauge to check your tyre tread. The minimum tread for a car is 1.6mm.
You should also check that:
- the tyre pressures are correct
- the tyres are all the same size (and type)
- they have no cuts, bulges or other serious signs of damage
Checking brakes to avoid an MOT fail
One in 10 MOT fails are due to brake issues and You can test your brakes every day as you set off.
If you hear any strange noises, or if your car pulls to one side, contact your local approved garage immediately.
You should also check your brake fluid levels.
Staying safe and saving money
DVSA Chief Executive, Paul Satoor, says:
"You shouldn’t wait for your MOT to check if your car needs maintenance. All drivers have a responsibility to make sure their vehicle is properly maintained and safe to drive at all times.
Carrying out simple checks on items like lights and tyres will help motorists to stay safe and legal, as well as saving time and money when their vehicle is due its MOT."
